Today South Africa got to witness and be part of something beautiful and rare. We gave a legend her flowers while she can still smell.
Legendary news reader Noxolo Grootboom retired today after 37 years of service. Watching the isiXhosa news today in probably a decade took me back to my childhood.
I remembered growing up, the warmth of home and all the great years I had spend with my mom.
Mam Noxolo Grootboom meant so much to our country that the president moved his address by 30 minutes so that it wouldn’t coincide with her final broadcast.
Farewell messages were sent to the broadcast and many more on social media.
What we witness was a country coming together to honour a true legend and give her her flowers while she’s still alive. I hope we can see more that moving forward.
Like you said mama, “Ningithandile, nami nganithanda” and those words proved true today.
Sikuthanda sonke emakhaya…
